Ambrosi punta sulla green strategy

Giuseppe Ambrosi, the son of the founder and current owner of the Company says: "As regards strategy, I believe it is indispensable to contribute to the reduction of emissions by making our Company more eco-sustainable. The actions we intend to take consist of two phases: we will design systems to reduce energy need and consumption and we will produce energy from renewable sources directly in the company. Paying more attention to the environmental impact we make when we manufacture our products is an important process that will distinguish us even more from other companies in the sector”.

The main investment deliberated by the Company to achieve this goal is already being carried out: we are installing a system for producing electricity with photovoltaic panels. On a roof having a surface area of approximately 10,500 m², we will install 2690 panels using polycrystalline silicon modules. The surface of the installed panels will cover approximately 4350 m² and will be equivalent to an installed power capacity of 618 kW. This new installation will make it possible to produce approximately 650,000 kWh annually. This power will cover part of our energy needs and will prevent the emission of 390,000 kg of CO2 (equivalent to 150 tons of petroleum).

The estimated production of this system in 30 years will amount to approximately 17,000,000 kWh or 10,200,000 kg of CO2 that will not go into the atmosphere.

But Ambrosi's green strategy involves even more. In addition to this large-scale work which is the first step being taken by the Company to produce its own energy, other actions are aimed at reducing its consumption and careless use of energy.

The first important action, closely connected to the photovoltaic panels, entails insulating the roof with polyurethane panels about 8 cm thick on the entire roof surface of the main factory. This action will result in an annual energy savings of approximately 100,000 kWh, in other words 60,000 kg less CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.

The second action will consist of building a heat recovery system to recover the heat that is normally dispersed by the products and the process wastewaters. The system comprises a series of heat exchangers and tanks for the accumulation of energy entirely managed by computer control. The first step foot into practice is to recover the heat produced by the refrigerators, which will result in an annual savings of approximately 70,000 m³ of methane, or 140,000 kg less CO2 emissions. The next transitions scheduled for the first half of 2011 will be to recover the heat produced by the boiler vapour as well as the heat produced when processing the whey.

Ambrosi believes it is important to remember that "These actions required an investment of approximately €2,800,000 and represent the first big step taken by the Company towards environmental responsibility. However we are aware that there is still much more to be done. 2010 will be a year in which Ambrosi has achieved the condition of not dumping 590,000 Kg of CO2 into the air. This amount of CO2 corresponds to the emissions of 350 compact cars that travel an average of 15,000 km per year. By the end of 2014 we would like to be able to self-produce about one fourth of the Company's energy needs by increasing the surface area covered with photovoltaic panels, by recovering energy currently being dispersed and by reducing our use of energy by being more mindful about how we use it".
